Program Overview
Wheel loaders — from compact skid steer loaders to large articulated 4WD machines — are among the most versatile and widely used pieces of earthmoving equipment in construction, mining, quarrying, agriculture, and waste management. Their ability to load, carry, push, and grade materials makes them indispensable on virtually every major project. They are also involved in a significant number of serious workplace incidents — tip-overs, struck-by incidents, and rollover accidents. ICLM's Wheel Loader Operation and Safety Training develops safe, competent, and certified wheel loader operators.
Understanding Wheel Loader Risks
Wheel loaders combine high mass (up to 50+ tonnes for large
machines), high speeds, and reduced operator visibility when
loaded — a combination that creates significant risk for
pedestrians and the operators themselves. Tip-overs during slope
operation, instability when carrying maximum loads, and pedestrian
strikes during reversing are the most frequent causes of serious
wheel loader incidents. Each is preventable with proper training
and operational discipline.
