Program Overview
Shearing machines — including guillotine shears, plate shears, bar shears, and alligator shears — are power-driven cutting machines capable of severing metal with enormous mechanical force. They are also among the most dangerous machines in metal fabrication, manufacturing, and recycling operations. Amputations, crush injuries, and lacerations are the characteristic injuries from shearing machine incidents — and they are almost entirely preventable with proper training, guarding, and operational discipline. ICLM's Shearing Machine Operation and Safety Training develops skilled, safety-conscious shearing machine operators.
Shearing machine injuries occur at the blade (point of operation), the material feeding zone, and the backgauge. Workers who hold material too close to the blade line, bypass the blade guard for "convenience," or reach into the machine during operation face catastrophic risk. The blade descends with a force that can sever a hand before any muscular response is possible. Guards, safe operating procedures, and trained operators are the only effective defenses.
